26. ~ Dove ~

There are close to three hundred species of doves and pigeons. A dove is typically 'smaller' than a pigeon. Different species coo, croak, or chirp. In captivitiy they live five to six years. In the wild they can live to be fifteen years old. However, some doves live into their twenties. They eat seeds, fruit and some vegetables. They have plump bodies, short legs and tails. To use the term dove or pigeon is like saying supper or dinner. However, a dove is generally white and pigeons are shades of blue, grey and white; sometimes they have black markings as well. Doves are considered wild, and pigeons are more domesticated. Doves tend to have a more pointed tail. Urban pigeons are called rock doves. As the males mature, they coo, bow, and strut with fanned tails around their sweetie. They are more vocal than the females. Doves/pigeons suck up water when they drink. The mourning dove is a beloved songbird. When they pair up with a partner, it will be for life. Many times the dove has been mistaken for a kestrel by hunters. Doves are symbolic of peace and love. Pigeons are know as the carrier of messages.

Medicine:

The medicine of doves reminds us to take a peaceful approach. They teach us that there are times we need to be soft, peaceful, and yet simultaneously maintain our strength. The dove teaches us to be messengers of harmony. Doves tell us to remember the importance of reconciliation. The medicine of doves teaches us that like pigeons and doves we can appear to be something to one person, and something yet again to another. The medicine of doves reminds us of spiritual freedom and the right to choose the greatest path for ourselves, and to follow it with a quiet passion, and an unabandoned faith!
