The hues of their coloured body and wings are beautiful! They love sunshine. Dragonfly wings are gauze-like and transparent. They eat insects, which they pursue in rapid flight. Their head is quite large for their body size. Dragonflies are harmless insects with a slender body, and a double set of wings. They feed on flies, mosquitoes and gnats. Dragonflies are harmless insects with a slender body, and a double set of wings. Dragonflies have a wingspan of five to six inches. The females lay their eggs in the water. Dragonflies are larger than damselflies. Dragonflies live around ponds and other water sources. Dragonflies have large eyes for their body size. Their eye's rest touching each other, while the damselflies' eyes are more on the side of their head. Dragonflies have stockier, thicker bodies. The dragonfly's hind wings are broader at the base. Dragonflies rest with their wings straight out, while damselflies rest with their wings raised above their bodies. Dragonflies can fly amazing patterns, forward, backward, hover and even loop the loop. Their life span is about one short month. There are more than five thousand species. They can fly between fifty and sixty miles per hour. Dragonflies are not born with their wings. They must earn them! They are born in a larva stage, and then grow into a metamorphosis stage - this is where they acquire their wings. Seeing two dragonflies is usually two males battling over their territory. If cold weather is setting in you will see dragonflies swarming. These fascinating insects have 30,000 facets per eye, and yes they do see in colour!
