3. ~ Antelope ~

Antelopes require little water! Pronghorns are beautiful creatures. They are graceful animals. Pronghorn antelope weigh between 75 - 130 lbs. The buck's horns grow to be up to fifteen inches long, having an unmistakable prong which is where they inherit their name. Their antlers/horns are part keratin (compressed hair) and part bone, which they shed each year. A small to moderate percentage of females also have short, straight, horns. Below the eye, males wear a black marking on their jaw and top of the nose area. Adults have thirty-two teeth. Pronghorns have no dew-claws, but they do have excellent and accurate peripheral vision. Few other mammals can sustain their running speed of up to sixty miles per hour. Rarely will pronghorn antelope jump over a fences as they prefer to crawl under or go through it. Their enemies are coyotes, bobcats and golden-eagles. Their favourite survival food is sagebrush. Over half of all births result in twins, each weighing five to seven pounds. Pronghorns have far and fast instinctive eyesight ranging close to three or more miles away. Many people don't realize these antelope are also good swimmers. Their distinctive alarm system is their eyes, ears, and nose. When danger is detected, they have white rump hairs which flare out to alert the rest of their herd.
