Eighty Animal Teachings & Medicines

1. ~ Ant ~

Ants are triumphant! Ants can carry four time its body weight. They are found nearly everywhere on Mother Earth. Ants build mounds with many chambers which are connected to an incredible tunnel system. There are tens of thousands of different types of ants. Most people learn about the ant's strong social and organized working habits. They have three main body sections. The antennae is used for four functions - smell, touch, hearing and taste. Ants use this antennae to touch each other, this is how they communicate. Ants leave a trail of pheromone their other members can follow. Ants usually live only ninety days to six months. In rare instances they may make it to their 1st birthday. Their favourrite foods are lettuce, apples, celery, broccoli, cucumber, and sometimes grains. Both the female and the male ants grow wings and fly into the air at mating time. Then, after mating they will lose these wings. Unfortunately for the male ants they die when mating is over. Then, the very fertile queen ant gets busy beginning her very own new colony home. Queen ants have the longer live span ranging from three to twenty-two years depending on the species.

Medicine:

Ant medicine teaches us that strength and patience are required as you continue to keep up your busy schedule. You should remember with cooperation you will get more accomplished. Ants remind us to build something which can benefit others. They also show us size doesn't matter - even the smallest efforts will result in rewards if we just stick with it. Ants teach us to be industrious, determined, group minded and above all that each of us are much 'stronger' than we realize. Ants represent the 'west,' which is a time of harvest and rewards.
